3. Healing the Vulnerable Child: The Heart of Schema Therapy

There are many potential portals to the vulnerable child mode or modes. This live webinar is all about exploring different avenues for making creative contact with vulnerable child modes and using a variety of therapeutic methods for healing.

Connecting with and healing vulnerable child parts of self (eg, “inner child work”) is at the heart of good schema therapy. Often we need to explore many layers of vulnerability and in doing so we may discover several early wounded parts, some of which developed very early in life.

The abandonment schema for example often has its origins in pre-verbal experiences (sometimes referred to as vulnerable infant modes). When such deep schemas are triggered in later life, our clients are often left feeling bewildered, confused and even frightened by the gravity & depth of their feelings and reactions (ie, there may be no words to describe how they are feeling). The abandonment schema can be thought of as the most primitive of all the early schemas and the one with the most pervasive and far-reaching impact across our life span.

One of the key therapeutic aims in schema therapy is to enable the client to access, reconnect with and re-parent vulnerable parts of self and to guide the client toward greater self-acceptance, self-compassion and psychological integration.

This practical webinar focuses on this particular aim and expands both the conceptualization of and the methods we can use to identify and begin to heal these early emotional wounds.

Topics include:

  • Defining the vulnerable child mode or modes and exploring the origins of the concept of the “inner child”.
  • An in-depth look at ‘abandonment’ and its life-long impact upon relationships and other adult adjustments.
  • Therapeutic tools to access and work with vulnerable child parts and early abandonment wounds.
  • Strategies for activating and healing pre-verbal abandonment.
  • Creative homework tasks (post-session & between sessions) for clients to foster reconnection and integration with previously disavowed child/infant parts.
  • The importance of teaching our clients how to engage in self-parenting / re-parenting work.
